10 Things You Can Do to Fight Climate Change: That Won’t Work!
April 16, 2009
Everybody cares about the environment, but few take action to preserve it. As of 2009, 43 states avoid passing recycling laws for glass, cans and plastic containers. Not one state possesses a water conservation policy. No state pushes for a national energy conservation policy. Everyone flees the thought of a “US Sustainable Population Policy.”
But people do care or at least pretend to care! Have you heard about the Sierra Club, National Resources Defense Council, Audubon, Greenpeace, Environmental Defense Fund and a dozen other environmental clubs trying to save our planet from human degradation? Of course! You receive junk mail asking for contributions weekly!
This month, the Environmental Defense Fund sent me a flyer, “10 Things You Can Do to Fight Global Warming!”
1. Recycle and buy minimally packed goods.
2. Wash clothes in cold, not hot water.
3. Install low-flow shower heads to use less water.
4. Replace standard light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.
5. Plug air leaks in windows and doors to increase energy efficiency.
6. Replace old appliances with energy-efficient models.
7. Walk, bike, carpool or use public transportation whenever possible.
8. Adjust your thermostat-lower in winter and higher in summer.
9. Run dishwasher only when full.
10. Share these steps with friends.
Unfortunately, all ten fail to deal with the one solution that would work. All ten fail because they avoid addressing the one solution politicians, religious leaders and citizens flee at all costs. No matter how much everyone conserves, the USA adds 3.1 million annually on top of the 77 million added to the planet each year. The human race adds a billion every 13 years.
What’s that dreaded, scary, frightening and intimidating solution?
Answer: we must stabilize human population sooner rather than later.
No matter how much conservation, alternative energy, green technology and ‘feel good’ therapies we promote, the only solution remains to stabilize population.
In a new documentary, Blind Spot, www.blindspotdoc.com , the authors state, “Whatever measures of greed, wishful thinking, neglect or ignorance, we have put ourselves at a crossroads which offers two paths, both with dire consequences. If we continue to burn fossil fuels we will choke the life out of the planet and if we don’t our way of life will collapse.”
One way or the other, the population issue will become THE single greatest issue facing Americans and the human race in the 21st century.
Dr. Joseph Tainter, author of The Collapse of Complex Societies, “Societies become complex beyond what can be sustained. When I see the U.S. society, I see decaying infrastructure, high military costs; solving problems in the short run do not solve the problem. We face loss of standard of living as well as social and political unrest.”

Richard Heinberg, author of Peak Everything, added, “There’s nothing normal going on in America today. Fossil fuels are finite and we’re drawing down that stock at a phenomenal rate of speed. This is the most serious problem to face the human race since we became humans.”
Derrick Jensen, author of The Culture of Make Believe, “We make believe that we can have infinite human growth and the age of oil will last forever. We have to make believe that we can kill a planet and still live on it.”
Frosty Wooldridge has bicycled across six continents – from the Arctic to the South Pole – as well as six times across the USA, coast to coast and border to border. In 2005, he bicycled from the Arctic Circle, Norway to Athens, Greece.
He presents “The Coming Population Crisis in America: and what you can do about it” to civic clubs, church groups, high schools and colleges. He works to bring about sensible world population balance at his website: www.frostywooldridge.com
